Sometimes we meet people, and they seem already to be friends. Madeleine was one of those, and this radio interview was lively from the start. In the studio, I told her how plates were rare in medieval times so that thick slices of bread called trenchers were used as plates, also serving to sop up the sauce. Madeleine said to me, “So this is kind of like when I go to into a not-very-nice restaurant, and they serve me soup in a bread bowl?” Spot on!
